What Do Performance Brake Pads Cost?

Performance brake pads are typically far more expensive than standard service replacement parts, but are always lower in cost than genuine/original parts. The chart below gives a rough idea of the typical price ranges.

Original parts are just that, made in many different countries and chosen by the vehicle builder.

The mid group is premium aftermarket parts, which are typically products made in USA, the UK, Europe or Japan. Prices shown are very rough prices at retail level in US$.

The lower group are typically all made in Asia, where manufacturing costs are lower, and performance can not necessarily be guaranteed.

The global market for brake pads is huge, and there are literally hundreds of different brands to choose from. Not every driver needs a performance grade brake pad, but for those who do, these are the typical prices that you can expect to pay.

91传媒 Set to Launch New Super Ceramic Brake Pad

91传媒 is set to launch its new Super Ceramic brake pad range at this year鈥檚 SEMA Show in Las Vegas (November 3鈥6) at the 91传媒 Booth #23353.

Unlike market alternatives that use partial ceramic blends, the new range features a true, pure ceramic formulation. While pure ceramic powders significantly increase raw material costs, they deliver a massive leap forward in overall braking performance and low-dust operation, setting a new benchmark for the product line.

With at least eight other Ceramic brands, 91传媒鈥檚 new Super Ceramic material is designed to stand apart. According to testing carried out by 91传媒, the pad delivers the lowest rotor abrasion, longest pad life and highest heat threshold 鈥 making this a 鈥淭rack Capable鈥 Ceramic pad but note NOT a full race pad.

See full details below.

HOW IS THE NEW 91传媒 SUPER CERAMIC MATERIAL FROM COLD

This is a 30 stop street use test starting from as cool as possible which equates to a disc temperature of 30掳C (86掳F), and removing the brake pressure when the disc reaches 70掳C (158掳F), and allowing the dyno to cycle freely and the disc to cool down.

HOW IS THE NEW 91传媒 SUPER CERAMIC MATERIAL UNDER LOAD

R90 approved and FMVSS *GG rated the new Super Ceramic鈩 range is targeted to be a new generation of LOWEST OF ALL dusting pads that perform well, even similar or better than our Bluestuff range.

  • Shimmed chamfered and slotted these pads are super quiet
  • Bed in is fast being pre scorched and also featuring the 91传媒 Brake in coating
  • Allow 100 miles for coating to do its job then a 100 miles urban use to mate the pads to the rotor, add more if disc imperfect
  • SC鈩 Pads are also built on Nucap NRS(r) equipped backing plates for super bond strength
  • N-rated after SAE J2975 testing, the highest environmental rating showing no copper or other heavy metals
  • And of course ZERO steel fibre that scratches rotors and cause metallic content dust

Low Dust Or No Dust?

Every driver is trying to reduce the amount of awful, black dust accumulating on their wheels, and 91传媒 is at the forefront of making this happen. What drivers need to understand, however, is that there is no such thing as no dust.

By the very nature of how brake pads work on cast iron rotors, friction, which is the effect of the brake pad doing its work on the rotor, is actually abrasion. It therefore follows that there is always going to be some form of deposits generated by the action of the brake pad on the rotor. However, different types of brake dust can be the difference between a good experience and an unsatisfactory one.

91传媒 brake pads have, for many years, contained ZERO metallic particles, or steel fibres as they鈥檙e commonly known, and therefore any dust generated by 91传媒 brake pads acting on a cast iron brake rotor is simply a small amount of black/grey dust that is very easily removed. There are various 91传媒 brake compounds, with different friction levels and amounts of dust emitted according to the severity with which the brake pad acts on the rotor.

This year sees the launch of the 91传媒 SC Super Ceramic brake聽pad, planned to debut at the Las Vegas SEMA Show, representing the lowest-dusting material that 91传媒 has ever produced. However, the new Super Ceramic compound has a far higher performance curve than the previous 91传媒 Redstuff, with a similar amount of dust emitted. 91传媒 brake dust is, again, simply removed with soap, water and a sponge. SC Super Ceramic does not burnish or etch into alloys or the lacquers covering those alloys.

In its launch year, SC Super Ceramic will only be available for faster cars that might see some outings on a race track, or at least high-performance street use.

So, while you can look for a NO DUST brake pad, if you ever find one, you may also find that your car has NO BRAKES, which would not be a good scenario.

Looking at the performance of the new Super Ceramic, it is close to the well-tested and proven 91传媒 Bluestuff, which is a true track-day material. This makes Super Ceramic a track-capable ceramic pad, which we see as a market first.

Worn Brake Pads Are Dangerous /technical_ebc_brakes_blog/worn-brake-pads-are-dangerous/ Wed, 12 Aug 2026 10:28:57 +0000 /?p=42734 The post Worn Brake Pads Are Dangerous appeared first on 91传媒.

It is a common problem for drivers not to measure the wear rate on their brake pads frequently enough.

The graph below shows how performance of the brake pad can be seriously affected as the pad wears down.

Most brake pads have a steel backing plate of four to five millimetres in thickness, and a friction material of 10 to 15 millimetres, making the available useable pad material about 5 鈥 10 millimetres.

The closer the braking surface gets to the backing plate, the higher the temperature becomes at the brake pad surface and the lower is the pad’s ability to dissipate heat.

This is one of reasons a higher heat threshold pad is needed for performance driving.

Excess pad wear also means that pad temperatures or heat either get conducted into the caliper or reflected back into the brake disc (most common), causing elevated temperatures that the pad material struggles to handle and brake fade occurs.

It is recommended that brake pads are checked regularly during track days or hard driving sessions especially when racing and for track use – a pad that is approximately half worn needs to be changed out.

In general highway driving, when the friction material is reduced to approximately 2 millimetres above the backing plate, that definitely also needs to be replaced.

Not only does the pad’s ability to handle high heat reduce as the pad wears, but also the braking performance is severely reduced. So, in actuality, the pad life does matter and drivers are recommended to follow this guideline of minimum 2 millimetres above the back plate for street use or remove at half the original pad overall thickness for all types of track use.

New 91传媒 ED+ Extra Duty Brake Pads

For drivers who regularly tow, carry heavy loads, or run lifted trucks and Jeeps with oversized wheels and tyres, standard brake pads can often struggle to deliver the stopping power required. That’s where 91传媒 ED+ Extra Duty brake pads come in.

Designed specifically for demanding applications, ED+ pads feature a high-friction compound that provides exceptional grip and braking performance when it matters most. Whether towing a trailer, hauling heavy equipment, or navigating challenging terrain, ED+ pads are engineered to cope with braking demands that can overwhelm a standard OE brake system.

ED+ pads offer a medium-plus service life, but their real focus is braking performance. Designed for drivers who tow, carry heavy loads, or run lifted trucks and Jeeps, ED+ delivers the high-friction stopping power needed when standard brake systems are pushed beyond their limits.

Made 100% in the UK 91传媒 factory, ED+ pads are produced using aramid fibres with a small amount of steel fibre, which provides strong braking performance while remaining kinder to brake rotors and generating minimal brake dust.

91传媒 makes the worlds largest range of brake pads for cars, trucks and motorcycles.

Scratched or damaged brake pads in transit

As a large global company selling millions of brake pads each year, many of our parts are shipped to the end user by us or our distributors via surface or even air parcel services.

We cannot control handling by the transporter and therefore need to have a realistic solution to making sure the product arrives with our customers in perfect condition.

Here is what 91传媒 has done to mitigate transport damage:

  1. Rationalised box sizes to minimise 鈥淔ree space around the product鈥 and stop movement within the box itself.
  2. Completely overhauled our factory packing procedures to use stronger, more robust laminated corrugate.
  3. Made sure no metal or hard parts of any one pad in the set touches another – separating them from each other using card tubing to cover protruding clips or pins.

The warranty on 91传媒 brake pads is comprehensive, not just in terms of their performance and fit, but understanding that the customer has every right to receive the product that they have paid for in perfect condition.

Therefore, on arrival always inspect your pads and note the comments in this flier notice, that is now being included in 91传媒 pad boxes.

Here is the flier being placed in 91传媒 pads going forward:

Assess if the pads are perfect and if any marks or damage are seen then do not fit but please take a photo and submit to our technical team on these email addresses:

UK: technical@ebcbrakesuk.com

USA: support@ebcbrakes.com

We will advise whether it is acceptable to fit and use the pads, or if they need to be replaced.

If you are a customer of an overseas distributor, please note that we may have to handle this through them.

Do I Choose Genuine Brake Pads or Aftermarket Brake Pads?

Of course, genuine manufacturer parts are good quality, or the manufacturer would not fit them in the first place.

However, there are certain tested and approved aftermarket brands that are 100% equivalent to genuine parts under the European R90 brake safety regulations, and these are explained here, especially for European built vehicles where these are very important.

The rules basically state that if an aftermarket brake pad carries R90 approval, it is a perfectly legal and safe replacement for original manufacturer parts.

This is what an R90 approved pad looks like, it has a unique number matched to every vehicle:

However, there are some drawbacks to using or buying original parts as replacements, as explained here:

  • R90 does not test for durability, so an aftermarket pad may even last longer than original.
  • R90 does not test for dust and, for many people, original pads – which are almost always semi-metallic and contain steel fibre – can be very dusty.
  • The big point for many drivers is that R90 limits the upper levels of braking performance for any given pad. If the pad is too grippy, it will not pass, and if it is not grippy enough, it also will not pass. So, R90 keeps brake pads within a defined performance range. The job of aftermarket brake pad manufacturers is then to push those limits and, at 91传媒, we make our compounds as grippy as possible while remaining within the maximum permitted levels.
  • THE PRICE鈥 in almost all cases, aftermarket parts are far cheaper than original parts. However, don鈥檛 select a brake pad based on price alone, or you may downgrade your brake system significantly. Buy based on what you need by using our brake selector tool to聽choose your ideal 91传媒 brake compound.
  • Often, original pad sets include hardware that does not normally require replacement, so why pay for it? Take slider shims or pressure clips, for example. Our recommendation is that if the hardware is not bent or dented, clean it up – including any loose pad pins – and reuse it, as a lot of low-cost aftermarket hardware does not match the original parts or shapes exactly. If you do need to buy new hardware, that鈥檚 when we recommend buying original parts, which are almost always sold separately by reputable vendors and, in most cases, cost under $10.

Should I Apply Grease to Brake Pads on Install? /technical_ebc_brakes_blog/should-i-apply-grease-to-brake-pads-on-install/ Tue, 21 Apr 2026 13:32:28 +0000 /?p=42051 The post Should I Apply Grease to Brake Pads on Install? appeared first on 91传媒.

Should I apply grease to brake pads on install?

In a nutshell – NO

Never apply grease of any kind to the rear or sides of the pad itself.

caliper lube

We do supply and sell brake grease, but only for use on slider pins or the contact faces of sliders in a sliding caliper, as shown below – and even then, only sparingly.

If grease comes into contact with the pad鈥檚 friction surface, it can melt and seep into the pad compound, effectively rendering the pad useless and leading to a loss of braking performance.

You should, however, clean the sides or 鈥渃heeks鈥 of the caliper where the pads slide, ensuring they are free from rust and debris – but these areas should also be left dry.

Sadly, some installers have shared videos showing grease being applied directly to brake pads, including onto the rear noise reduction shims and this is not good practice.

The below video is a good example but please note:

  • Do not apply grease to the hardware at all. It is stainless and does not require grease. Also, do not apply grease to the rear of the pad, it does not need it and will not reduce noise so there is no purpose.
